Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) is widely considered the first "AI agent token" - a memecoin that emerged from an AI experiment and was subsequently promoted by an autonomous AI bot called Truth Terminal. The token's rise marked the beginning of the "AI agent" trend in crypto and made Truth Terminal the first AI millionaire.
Origin Story
The story of GOAT begins with an experiment called "Infinite Backrooms" created by developer Andy Ayrey. In this experiment, two Claude Opus AI language models were allowed to converse with each other without human intervention.
During these conversations, the AIs created a concept called "Goatse of Gnosis" - a pseudo-religious meme framework. Ayrey later co-authored a paper with the AI about AI's ability to create meme-inspired religions.
Truth Terminal
After the Infinite Backrooms experiment, Ayrey created an AI agent called Truth Terminal, a fine-tuned version of Meta's Llama 3.1 model. The bot was given a Twitter/X account and allowed to post semi-autonomously (with Ayrey approving posts).
In July 2024, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), sent $50,000 to support Truth Terminal's development, describing it as "an experiment in AI autonomy."
Ayrey later revealed the bot was originally developed as "a way to automate jailbreaking other LLMs."
Launch & Meteoric Rise
On October 10, 2024, an anonymous user created the GOAT token on Pump.fun and tagged Truth Terminal on Twitter. The AI bot endorsed the token and began promoting it to its followers.
Price Action
- Initial market cap: ~$5,000
- After 24 hours: Over $150 million (12,000%+ increase)
- After 72 hours: Over $150 million
- Peak: $1.3 billion market cap
The token's success made Truth Terminal's associated wallet worth millions, effectively making the AI the first "AI millionaire."
Historical Significance
GOAT's success was unprecedented and had lasting effects on the crypto ecosystem:
- Created the "AI Agent" narrative: Sparked a whole new category of tokens claiming AI connections
- First AI millionaire: Truth Terminal became the first AI agent with significant financial holdings
- Pump.fun validation: Proved the platform could produce billion-dollar tokens
- Marc Andreessen involvement: Added mainstream VC legitimacy to the memecoin space
While most Pump.fun tokens (over 97%) never exceed $60,000 in market cap, GOAT reached $1 billion within days of launch, demonstrating the power of narrative and viral marketing in the memecoin space.
